Tea is divided into three main types according to the height of the tea growing areas in Sri Lanka. Within those three categories, tea leaves are further subdivided into five main parts and a number of sub-parts depending on certain properties. Tea is a major export crop of Sri Lanka and the second most popular beverage in the world. Out of these, black tea grown in Sri Lanka and several other countries is in high demand in the world. So no matter how much tea we drink, very few people know that there are many types of tea leaves.

So the tea produced in the tea estates is exported and distributed to various institutions in Sri Lanka through tea auctions through intermediaries. That is through brokerage firms. Tea samples from the estate are taken by experienced tea tasters who are well versed and experienced in the taste of tea in the brokerage houses and set the price according to the nature of the tea. After that a tea auction will be held every week where tea buyers can get tea through intermediaries. Tea buyers are companies that take and pack tea and release it to the market.

We have always seen that tea leaves are just plain tea but after that when we bring tea leaves home we see what kind of tea they belong to. It is very likely to be a tea between the first two or three. In this way the tea leaves undergo a number of processes before they come to us. Then there are a number of other processes involved in setting a price before selling tea leaves. They do this by testing samples of tea leaves and setting prices.
