I have decided to follow a MSc degree in Finance as my ambition is to further my career as an entrepreneur. My father is a businessman and engaged in trading shares of companies and investing on them. My father advised me that Share market is a high risk area and probably, most of the inputs I have on stock market are point of views of my father and I was influenced through his perception. I used to see him reading and writing balance sheets, financial statements which were some columns and figures for me at that time. Therefore, I thought, if a businessman like my father is very much concerned when investing in stock market, thus surely it is not an easy task. However, I have positive mindset and in order to make profits I have to study every aspect of the stock market and read the daily news papers specially on stock market news.
As a young child, I started learning how markets work using free resources available in the Internet and playing around with dummy shares through some of the free websites available in the World Wide Web.
At the age of 18, my father invested small amount on behalf of me in the share market and helped me to open up an online trading account at the Colombo Stock Exchange and introduced me to his own stockbroker. Since then I have been doing little trading absolutely for the purpose of studying.
At present, I am doing my BSc in Investment and Financial Risk Management at Royal Business School. This is a tailor-made course which offers me an exceptionally in-depth study on entrepreneurship and it has helped me to study different kinds of markets and a vast outline of economics. I have gained knowledge through this course, which has been extremely helpful when applied the knowledge in practical manner. Mathematics is one of the subjects of my course. Learning Mathematics at university is an entirely different experience from what I have learnt at the School. At the University level, Mathematics is taught with practical examples and what I was taught was very constructive for other modules and when applied the knowledge in practical manner.
Apart from academic interest, I also have a diverse experience in extra-curricular activities. I have been serving as an Event Organizer for the Finance Society. We have organized over ten events in the past two years including the most recent fundraiser for donation to help the people of Philippines who got affected by the recent Typhoon.
Also as a treasurer of the literature society, I have gained experience with financial management, as I had to prepare the budget proposals for every event which we have organized and showing a profit from every event and such funds goes to charity.
I have been attending a group of public speakers called toastmasters in my university to practice and gain the courage to speak in public, as it had been one of my greatest weaknesses. Public speaking caused me much anxiety and concern at the beginning. I realized through preparation and practice I could overcome my nervousness and perform exceptionally well. Being a good public speaker, I can enhance my career, boost my self confidence and open up countless opportunities before me. I have been attending over a year now and I feel I have come a long way as part of the group, I have to speak in public once every two weeks. This has been one activity that I have mostly enjoyed.
My experience at Royal Business School has helped me to realize that entrepreneurship is a very vast vicinity and the knowledge I can gain is limitless. I have realized that prior to my entering into the commercial world, I should gain as much knowledge as possible. Therefore, my decision to continue my education to follow a MSc degree and in the event time permits further continue my education and enroll myself for PhD in Finance or a related subject.
Following my MSc at your prestigous University will be my ambition in life. Apart from other universities being one of the top ranked prestigious universities in your country, it could provide me a challenging academic experience.
As such, I am looking forward to hearing from you.
