Polonnaruwa was the second capital of Sri Lanka. It is a showcase of the great ancient architecture of past Sri Lanka. You can see lot of many Buddhist monasteries and monuments which were built by the Sri Lankan kings who ruled the country in the past. Polonnaruwa architecture, art and sculpture is well displayed at Gal Viharaya,Thuparamaya Image House and Lankatilaka Image House and many other sites scattered through out Polonnaruwa ancient city. The main tourist attractions in Polonnaruwa are preserved ruins of magnificent royal palaces, enormous Buddhist temples, intact monumental sculpture in colossal statues carved from sold rock boulders. At present, Polonnaruwa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its preserved ruins and restored ancient irrigation reservoirs.
