Dambulla Rock Temple – Dambulla Rock Temple also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla is a World Heritage Site in Sri Lanka. Dambulla has been a sacred place since the 2nd century BC. It has been given the name of golden temple as its gilded interior. This Rock Temple is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. There are about 80 caves in surrounding areas. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves which contain both statues and paintings related to the life of Lord Buddha and his life. There are total of over 150 Buddha statues, 3 statues of Sri Lankan kings and 4 statues of gods and goddess. The latter 4 include two statues of Hindu gods, Vishnu and Ganesh. Near Dambulla has a wealth of luxury hotel accommodation. Dambulla is only 18 kms away from Sigiriya which offers numerous luxury boutiques as well as deluxe hotels. It is interesting to see the monkeys which are abound near the temple.
